OUR NEGLIGENCE

Shekinah started disturbing me on an assignment they were given in school.
A young boy holding a phone

Shekinah: Sis, please help me search on Google about "how to make a flying object".

Me: What is that ? It's KITE abi ? You'll use Nylon and broom.

Shekinah: (Shook his head right-left in disagreement) No, not kite ...This thing ehm ehm ... that can fly ...

Me: So you don't even know what you want to search, hissed.

Shekinah: Just type (an object the flies),Google may bring it out.

I kept mute and he understood it to be that I've stopped listening to him. Shekinah pestered for several days. I'll assure him that I'll help him search but I never did.

Then one morning, I woke up turned on my data and noticed no online messages were coming to my phone. My Facebook wont load. (Ahh ! Am I out of data ? But I just bought data last night .. I said to myself).

I launched my chrome and check the browse history and saw a long history of searches on "HOW TO MAKE A DRONE" (I'm not sure that's was the assignment though, the boy is too adventurous) then it clicked. SHEKINAH !!!

I was about to react but my inner voice said "Count the number of days he has been begging you to search it for him and the number of times you said you will, yet you didn't".

"If you are going to pay for it with your wasted data, I think it is well deserved".

At this point, I was quiet, I didn't even try to scold him because I felt it was my fault. I was also recalled a time when I was asked what class he is in (Shekinah) and I could barely remember.

So, I began to try to engage him in talks about school. Out of the blue, I could just be like "So, did you do any test recently?"... Just to know a few things about how well he is doing.

I remember a day I was walking on the road and I heard a bike rider shout on a school boy that was walking to school; "Omo school, going to school by 10 am ... ahhh", he shouted.

I turned to see the boy and he was still walking at a slow pace.

HOW DID WE GET HERE? For me, I think it is NEGLIGENCE !!

That boy could be in a house where his parents leave for work as early as 7 a.m. and return as late as 10 p.m. and in a situation like there is no proper guidance.

It has even gotten worse to the extent that some parents now encourage their children to go to school late. You will hear "Take your time, don't worry I'll drop you in school. Nobody will beat you".

LET'S NOT BE TOO ENGROSSED IN PURSUIT FOR THINGS THAT WE FORGET THE ESSENTIAL BASICS. THEY MAY NEVER SAY IT BUT THEY NEED YOUR TIME.

Mummy, Attend your daughter's OPEN DAY
Brother Timi, the mathematics you are so good at may be that your brother's weak subject but how will you know, when you never ask of his studies.
